Where to begin??

So I started this blog b/c I was talked into by my friend Elizabeth.."If I can FB than I can blog, right??" We'll see how this goes.

I have chosen to home-school Mikaela and Anyssa this year. My main reason for doing this is because I feel lead by the Lord. He's calling me out. I'm not nervous. At times I doubt my own abilities, but than He directs my heart and mind back to Him and so I feel confident in Him that all will turn out for the best. Through lots of prayer and research I have come up with a plan to get my girls first mastered in the basics of reading and math. We will focus most of our attentions on this for now. Of course daily reading, praying and lessons n the word is a given. I'm hoping to make this as much fun and yet educational for the girls as God enables me. When I get the girls mastered in reading and math than we will start them in the Robinson Curriculum (Our Chosen Curriculum).

Mikeala will be in first grade this year (according to school standards and her age). She, at the moment, struggles with recognizing the alphabet. For instance, when she wants to write something out, she'll ask me out to spell what she wants to say. I'll give her the letters verbally and she'll respond with "but I don't know what that looks like". When ever I do this I always sound out each letter to her. She'll than "count" her ABC's and then, at times, be able to come up with the letter. But not all the time. Some may think she's behind other children...but I think it's just where she's at. It's not for a lack of trying on our part or her schools part. It's just where she "wants" to be. She is very good with math and actually enjoys working problems out and learning the concepts. The curriculum we've chosen is heaving in reading. So it's important that we master these areas in order for her to move along. I will be using vertical phonics to teach both the girls. This is the curriculum we've chosen to start out with TATRS (Phonics program we've chosen to use.) Kali (aka.,Mikaela) is extremely artistic. I have bags full of pictures she's drawn, colored, and things she's made through out the years.  It seems endless; how does a mother throw these out? She is very good with legos as well. She received a couple of advance sets (for 8yr olds and up) for her birthday and applied her self to following the directions (from the step by step instructional pictures) and has created a house and many other things that AMAZED us. She LOVES doing art projects..she actually thinks school this year will consist of nothing but this. Cute, right? To say the least, I am looking forward to working one on one with her and watching her grow in the grace of God, to be all He has created her to be! More on this later...

  1. When Kevin was in First Grade he also couldn't seem to remember his alphabet. I don't think this is something to worry about. He did just fine after he relearned them.

  3. LEGOS!!! Um, why didn't you tell me Kali liked legos! There my all time FAVORITE toy in the WORLD!!! (we don't have them in the house because i've heard TOO many horror stories from my doctor and others about kids being aero-lifted to GR because they swallowed them and couldn't breath--8 year olds, not babies)... anyway... they were my FAVORITE toy EVER! :)

  4. Linda, thanks for that reassurance. I have to tell myself over and over that she WILL pick it up and not to stress myself by comparing her to other kids. Hard, but doable.

Heather (aka, mommabear), Love you girl. Thanks for the encouragement.

E, YES, she LOVES legos! We put them on top of the cabnet out of reach of the kids and she has to ask us to work on them. Then we are very strict (or maybe I am) that she is the only one to play with them right now. I do this b/c you have to keep the sets together and not get them mixed up. Glad to know about the dangers. Thanks for sharing. YOu two should get together and have a lego day! LOL

  5. maybe we WILL have a lego day!! :) awesome! the only reason i said anything is that my doctor (Carol DeWeerd) said she took them out of her house because she had dealt with too many kids swallowing them and some dying--the legos have sharp edges and just can't go down or up, so you can't even knock them out with the hiemlech or anything-must be surgically removed! :S but, eventually, when both my kids are over 6 and don't have tendencies to put anything in their mouth (aden either puts things in his mouth, ears, nose, etc. and kendyl will still chew on things when she is concentrating--so do i!!)...anyway...i would love them to play with them...they have the bigger ones (inbetween the duplo & the little ones)...great idea putting them up on the fridge! :)
